I always think its a great week when my favorite periodical is released (have I said lately? That would be KNIGHTS OF THE DINNER TABLE!), but there are some fine new releases this week, including SHURI #1, by Nnedi Okorafor & Leonardo Romero, expanding the Black Panther universe, EXORSISTERS #1, by Ian Boothby & the amazing Gisele Lagace, while some will be excited by the relaunch of THE UNSTOPPABLE WASP #1, by Jeremy Whitley & Gurihiru or by LUCIFER #1 by Dan Waters & Max and Sebastian Fiumara . Look at the full list below the cut to see if there’s something that excites YOU!

Relatively small week, with a number of mid-level books — but no real obvious stand-out hit. I guess this week’s recommendation would be either the decades-old FROM HELL, now being re-released in color for the first time, or the newest Brubaker/Phillips joint, the original graphic novel MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES. Look under the cut for all of this week’s books!

The book of the week is a big tie. On the one hand, there is Sam Humphries and Jen Bartel’s BLACKBIRD #1; on the other, you have the long-awaited return of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba to UMBRELLA ACADEMY! Most DC Universe books this week have shiny foil covers, as part of a new month-long promotion. Same insides, though. There’s also a TON of new #1s…. I had to count twice when I saw it was TWENTY-THREE titles. Harder to see who will buy those books when they stack like cordwood? Check under the cut for allll of the releases!

This week’s big book is probably HEROES IN CRISIS #1 by Tom King and Clay Mann, addressing murder and PTSD in the DC Universe. Sounds dark! But we’ve also got the new 13th Doctor Who’s “0th” comic book, the first issue of GAMMA by Erick Freitas & Ulises Farinas, a new mini-series for FAITH, Chelsea Cain’s first issue of MAN-EATERS, and the comics launch of STRANGER THINGS. That’s not even counting the newest SAGA TP, a new DC SUPERHERO GIRLS volume, and, nice, new Moebius comics for America. Sounds like there is a comic for everyone this week! Scope the list and tell us what YOU think looks good, just below the cut!

This weeks most asked for book has absolutely have to be BATMAN DAMNED, as not only the launch of the highly anticipated experimental new mature reader imprint DC BLACK LABEL but also a return of the popular pairing of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bremejo.

Plus, the penultimate MISTER MIRACLE, the second act of CODA, more DAYS OF HATE, the second issue of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ PEARL and so much more!

Check the cut to find out what else!

September is starting slow, but there is the first of the SANDMAN UNIVERSE titles, post introductory one-shot with THE DREAMING from Si Spurrier and Bilquis Evely. Plus some continuing favorites with NEW LIEUTENANTS OF METAL, IMMORTAL HULK, the return of SNOTGIRL after a healthy hiatus and the next of Brian Michael Bendis' line of creator owned efforts with COVER with long David Mack.

More, of course, after the cut

One last time around the block for August. The biggest new things is probably the RICK & MORTY & DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, which mostly is exciting because it is the kind of title an English editor probably would have an aneurysm if it came across their desk. Also, yes, I know it is VS but I am willing to bet that was the editor being like "I don't want to go to the hospital today, sir."

Otherwise some of our favorites come in late this month! We have NEW WORLD, MODERN FANTASY, MOON KNIGHT, ISOLA and it is TECHNICALLY a #1 there is an issue of SCARLET from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev this week and is actually no where near an actual first issue but is very likely still the best thing Bendis has ever written.

Look at the cut and see what else is happening this week!

I sincerely hope I am not in the minority when I say that the book I am most excited about, not only this week but in general, is WEST COAST AVENGERS! If you had been reading the HAWKEYE book Kelly Thompson was writing this is where you go next, but everyone should read it really.

Plus BEASTS OF BURDEN returns alongside new DAYS OF HATE, Matt Rosenberg gets back to basics with PUNISHER and if you do not shop at a store that doesn't order things that aren't available through Diamond you absolutely have to get TONGUES from Anders Nilsen now that Fantagraphics is distributing it.

There is a part of me that thinks it's really cool when a Wednesday lands on the first of the month, so this week is already pretty good to me. But there are also some pretty good comics coming your way.

In addition to things that are just month in month out great like BATMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, MISTER MIRACLE and STRAY BULLETS there is the FINAL(!?) issue of SHADE THE CHANGING WOMAN, one of the most exciting and freshest comics of the last few years, and the debut of SEEDS from Anne Nocenti and David Aja from Dark Horse/Berger Books.

Check the cut for all the other cool things coming on the first of August!

  • Tokyo Tarareba Girls - Volume 1 by Akiko Higashimura

For those lamenting the end of Princess Jellyfish, never fear - the over 30 lady squad is here! A bit of a departure from the otaku women of Jellyfish, Tarareba Girls captures the essence of women who are feeling cornered by societal expectations and in this case, it’s getting married before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Rinko, script writer and protagonist, doesn’t want to see her career and marriage prospects taken over by 20 somethings and decides to become proactive about finding a husband before 2020.  Along with her friends Koyuki and Kaori, Rinko starts going to disastrous dating mixers and begins to question whether her self-worth should be tied up with her job or with her ability to be in a relationship.

I love this manga for tackling the hard adult questions I don’t feel most manga or even American comics get to very often. What is love and does it matter if you already love your job? Does someone need someone else to feel complete or can they just throw themselves into work and hope they don’t get aged out by younger competitors? I think Higashimura has a great story to work with and I can’t wait for more volumes!

The "holiday" has effected the the actual size of this week, but also increased it's overall density. We finally see what happens in BATMAN #50 and how that rolls out into the new CATWOMAN ongoing from Joelle Jones. Plus across the street we have Ta-Nehisi taking over CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Plus debuts of COSMIC GHOST RIDER, NEW LIEUTENANTS OF METAL and new issues of IMMORTAL HULK and PAPER GIRLS!

Check the cut for the rest of this weeks comics!
