The Savage Critic: October
16th, 2002
By Brian
Hibbs
Welcome
back, my friends, to the show that never ends. I'm
still catching up from last week's excursion to LA, so I really want
to blow the entire column off this week.
However, I just noticed Dirk
linked to us from Journalista,
so I guess we have a few new people checking us out this week. Thanks
Dirk.
Anyway, not a chance of me
typing out all of my opinions this week, so here's some minor highlights.
TP/GN of the Week:
Honest to god, I wanted to give it to Bob Fingerman's Beg the Question,
but I just can't do it -- he lost something on the order of fifty pages
from the original GN, and I really, really missed the dream sequence
from the end of the last issue. Damn this is great stuff on the balance,
but I'~m afraid I prefer the original cut much more. So we go to pick
#2, then, which is the Shazam Archives V3. This stuff
is loony, but it has such a heart. I'm about midway through the book,
and I'm loving every page.
Pick of the Week:
It was a strange week of comics, the stuff I really was expecting to
love (i.e., War Story, Mek) I was fairly lukewarm
on. So I think we'll go with either Teenagers From Mars #4
(which meanders terribly, but is getting better with each issue) or
Radioactive Man #106 with that wonderful Gold Key cover
-- the guts were fine (not as much of a sharp parody of GK comics...
but there's not a lot to work with there). I'll let you decide which
was actually better.
Pick of the Weak:
I think this week's biggest dud was Stormwatch: Team Achilles
#4. Showing character competence in having your adversaries
be utterly and completely incompentent is lousy storytelling. And, y'know,
"hacking" can't be an excuse for everything. Blech. Following is the
full list of stuff Comix Experience received this week, for those 3
people who might use this as a shipping list.
Next week: A return to the
