The Savage Critic: September 12th, 2001 By Brian HibbsWelcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. Not even in the face of tragedy. I, for one, think it is important that we go on, and go forward with our lives. Otherwise they won. Still... I’m in horrible shock still from Tuesday’s tragic events, and, honestly, I haven’t read very many comic books at all this week (it didn’t seem that important), so I’m going to break from tradition a little, and just do my "reviews" of brand-spanking new comics this week. Next week I should be back to full reviews. My deepest sympathies to both the victims, and their families, this week. ANGEL VOL 2 #1: Personally, I thought Fray was much much better. It may have been because Whedon assumes you know every scrap of his backstory in this issue. Having never seen the Angel TV show (or the Buffy one, for that matter), I was relatively lost, and, frankly, didn’t care much. Eh. DANGER GIRL KAMIKAZE #1: American Manga/Cheesecake. It’s not bad, but I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as Cambell’s Danger Girl. A little too much wide variance in tone – hard to feel suspense when everyone is cracking silly puns all the time. Eh. ESTABLISHMENT #1: With the (for this reader) colossal failure of The Monarchy, I was prepared to hate this. I also didn’t think much of the "preview". But, color me surprised as I found this first issue to be fun and engaging, and a book I think I will continue to be reading. Very good. FRED THE CLOWN #1: Roger Landrige (it’s been YEARS), returns with a new, predominately pantomime, comic featuring a fucked up clown and the sorrow and stupidity in his life. Blech, that’s a shitty description. Anyway, it was a good solid and dense read, and it’s a good bargain for the cover price. Good. FURY #1: Almost certainly more swearing per page than anything short of an Eros comic. It looks like it might be a fun and clever twist ("Fury’s time was gone when the cold war was over"). But, honestly, I have to say that I think I liked the Nick Fury of the Ultimate X-Men that came out this week. Don’t get me wrong, it is solid work, but the use of this character, in this context is, I think, wrong. Nonetheless: Good. GI JOE #1: Hard for me to be nostalgic for something I truly hated at the time. Reading the comic purely on it’s own merits: Eh. US WAR MACHINE #1: Ugh. Stiff and awkward figure work, mediocre writing, and, most egregious of all, that HORRIBLE computer lettering. Lettering in comic books need to be INVISIBLE to your eye, and computer fonts like this one scream out "Look at me! Look at me!" Max’s first failure. Awful. For Sake of Completeness, here’s a list of all of the OTHER comics that CE got in this week, that I did NOT read (and, therefore, am unlikely to review!). Note, that in most cases this is limited to 1) Manga, which I try to read as it is collected; 2) "Kids" comics like most of the Archies; 3) titles that were subs-only, either by design or accident; 4) Porno [oh, like you need me to REVIEW it!], and 5) Things that looked SO bad on the racks that I didn’t bother. Or, like this week, I just didn’t have the time/willpower to read. ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #596 And, for even MORE completeness sake, here’s a list of books, TPBs, GNs, and magazines that CE got this week. I generally haven’t read any of this by the time I post these reviews. Though I generally attempt to give at least one recommendation amongst the TPBs each week, since I HAVE read the material at SOME point. ACTION FIGURE NEWS AND TOY REVIEW #107 This Week’s TPB recommendation is: Not at all a good week for TPBs, so I’ll give a hesitant nod to the $50 Blackhawk Archives. |

Average Rating for the Week: 3.86 (of 7.00) on our partial list of 7 new #1’s. That really is a lot, isn’t it? Pick of the Week: I still haven’t read most of the comics, so let’s let this go this week. Pick of the Weak: Not this week. Doesn’t seem right.
